Other services related to your domain name may also be affected, such as FTP and email. First, check that your ISP or LAN is up and running. Second, verify that your website's server is up and running, preferrably by using another ISP to access the Internet.

Assuming that there is no problem on your end and on the server where your site is hosted, then this could be an issue with one of the "hops" that your ISP uses to access the site being visited.

The Internet is not one homogenous line from your computer to the website server. ISPs usually use other ISP's network infrastructure in order to pass the signal request. For example, if the website server is located in California, from the Philippines, the signal is routed first to Taiwan, then Japan, then Alaska and only then to California. So if there is a telco problem in Japan, then you won't be able to see the site in California even if there's no technical problem on your end or the server end. Unfortunately, this situation is already beyond the control of your ISP or your hosting provider. The next best thing your ISP can do would be to switch to a back up pathway, if they have such an arrangement ready.

An easy way to determine any issues in the hops is through the tracert command. This is typed in the command prompt window (Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt):

tracert (IP address)

For example:

tracert 69.93.219.154

This will list down the different signal hops starting from your computer all the way to the target server. Any portion where there is a time out will indicate a problem in that particular hop.

I have trouble connecting or staying connected on my FTP

In cases where you are having trouble connecting or staying connected to your FTP connection when using an FTP client, there are several factors to consider:

1. Internet connection

First check if you have a stable Internet connection. When Internet connection is intermittent or unstable, then this can cause cut offs with the FTP connection.

You can use the PING command to test your Internet connection as follows:

a. Go to Command Prompt (Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt).
b. At the C:\> type the following: ping -t (domain name or IP address).

If you are getting a lot of timeouts, then your Internet connection is unstable.

2. LAN settings

Check if your LAN is having a problem. Go to the LAN server and try to connect from there. If you can connect with the server but not with any of the client PCs, then there is an issue with the LAN.

3. Firewall settings

Make sure that your firewall (either at the client PC or server) is not blocking FTP access. If access was working before, someone may have accidentally changed the settings or if there is an automatic program update, this can sometimes change certain settings even without the user doing anything.

4. FTP client settings

a. Go to Advanced settings and switch in between ACTIVE and PASSIVE modes.

In Filezilla, go to Site Manager > highlight the FTP site > click the Advanced button.

b. Check the Keep Alive and Timeout settings under Edit > Settings.

How to activate the anti spam features of IMail

WWW.COM.PH servers use IMail as its email server. IMail offers a lot of features, among them a way to filter spam mail by defining a set of key words that IMail will flag. In order to activate these features for all email accounts under your hosted domain, follow these steps:

A. Go to your webmail page by typing in http://www.YourDomain.com:8383
B. Log on as admin@YourDomain.com and provide the password.
C. This also saves on the email server disk space usage because email is automatically deleted once they are downloaded by the email client.

However, there are cases where several users need to access the same email account. It would make email harder to manage if all the messages were to be saved onto the server and the messages viewed purely by webmail. This would also add to the disk space usage if messages are not deleted regularly. Fortunately, there is a simple solution to this by changing some settings in your Outlook Express.

You can set your Outlook Express to save copies of messages on the server, so that they are not deleted once you download those messages. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Click on Tools > Accounts > highlight the particular email address > click the Properties button > go to Advanced tab.
2. On the bottom part, under "Delivery", put a check mark on the "Leave a copy of messages on server".
3. Put a check mark on "Remove from server after ___ day(s)" to indicate how many days before Outlook Express will delete the mail the next time it connects to the server.

Note:
You need to repeat each step for every Outlook Express client that will access the email account. Otherwise, if even one Outlook Express accesses the email account without being set to leave a copy of messages on the server, it will automatically delete all the messages in the server after downloading the mail.

How to manage your web hosting disk space usage

Disk usage is an important part of managing your web hosting account. Some hosting companies, for example, have an account lock out policy. Meaning, once your account reaches its maximum allotted disk space, the account is locked so that no new data can be uploaded, received or saved (for example, incoming email will bounce).

Fortunately, WWW.COM.PH hosting accounts do not have account lock out. You will simply be informed by the system about your excess disk space usage and be given a grace period to reduce said disk usage. Should the grace period expire without the usage being reduced, your account will be upgraded to the next higher plan. Still, in order to avoid having your account inadvertently upgraded, it would be a good idea to follow a few steps to manage disk space usage.

Disk usage spikes are most commonly caused by accumulated email in the servers. Therefore, most of your attention needs to be focused on your users' email usage.

1. Spam email can contribute to sudden spikes in disk usage. Make sure to delete spam mail as soon as they are downloaded. You may also make use of the anti-spam features of IMail in order to filter out spam mail based on key words that commonly occur in the spam mail. This will not eradicate spam mail 100% but it will make the incoming volume more manageable.

2. Encourage users to use a POP3 email client like Outlook Express. Once these email clients download mail from the server, they automatically delete email from the server, preventing email (especially those with attachments) from building up your disk usage.

In cases where several users need to access the same email address, you can set your Outlook Express to save a copy of messages in the server. This way, there is no need to check email exclusively via webmail except in emergencies.

3. For webmail users, they should regularly delete old mail. For really important mail, they should either copy and paste the body of the letter to their computer or download the attachment. Also check the "Sent" folder and any other folders within the webmail account, because email in these folders will still take up disk space.

Overall, prevention is the best way to avoid the surprise of being notified of a big disk usage. Users should check their email at least once a day in order to make it easier to manage the email that is coming in.

How to obtain the IP address of a domain name

There will be cases where you will need to know the IP address of a certain domain name, particularly when you are trying to do a DNS work around. There are two possible ways to obtain the IP address:

1. You can PING the domain name. In order to ping a domain name, do the following:

a. Go to the Command Prompt window (in most versions of Windows this is accessed via Start > Accessories > Command Prompt).
b. On the C:\>, type in ping (domain name); for example: ping www.yahoo.com

The ping results will immediately come out with the IP address of the domain name. However, if your ISP is having a DNS resolution issue, then the ping command may not work (it will return a "Unknown host" error).

2. The second way to obtain the IP address of a domain name is to use a free online tool called Domain Dossier.

a. Go to the Domain Dossier site.
b. Enter the domain name (without the "www") in the "Domain or IP address" field.
c. Press Enter or click the "Go" button (no need to check the other items).

The IP address of the domain name will then come out.

You can also use Domain Dossier to check other records and services associated with the domain name.

Unable to receive email from certain domains

You may encounter cases where you are unable to receive emails from certain email addresses / domains. This can be cause for concern especially if you are waiting for important mail from old or new clients. First check that there are no technical issues with your LAN / router or office set up, and also check that the sender has no technical issues as well.

After checking that there is no other technical issue on recipient side and sender side, check the PTR settings and reverse DNS lookup of sender's server. Those with no PTR or reverse DNS are rejected by WWW.COM.PH's server. This is an anti-spam setting.

To check the reverse DNS, you can follow this simple step:

1. Go to www.dnsstuff.com
2. Scroll down to "IP Tests" and look for the Reverse DNS Lookup field
3. Enter either the IP address or domain name (without the "www") in the appropriate field and click the RevDNS button.

In the results field, you will be able to see if the target server has a PTR defined or not.

PTR assigns a name to the IP address. So if a recipient server only sees the IP address of the sender's server, incoming email from that server is classified as spam. The point of action needs to be taken by the system administrator overseeing the sender's email server.

As more and more servers start defining their PTR settings, they also start rejecting email coming from servers that do not have PTR settings. It is one way to combat spam hence the burden of responsibility is with the sender's server to comply with such settings.

My .PH domain is NOT AUTHORITATIVE even when web server and DNS server are set

If you are getting a NOT AUTHORITATIVE error when trying to set the name servers on your .PH domain, the DNS Server may have an issue even if Web Server is up. The two are distinct. Basically, if DNS Server is down, it is unable to interpret the domain name into the IP address that would lead it to the web server.

To bypass this,

1. Log on to dotPH (www.dot.ph)
2. Click Add or Modify DNS Entries
3. Enter TYPE IN, Class a, and the IP number of the target name server

This will bypass the need for a DNS server so that it will go straight to the web server.

The "A" settings tells where the domain is really hosted. The CNAME tells that if the user uses the word WWW before the domain name it shloud treat it as if there is no WWW then it uses the IP location of the "A" settings to be able to locate the web server.

In the case of dotPH, CNAME should point to ns3.domains.ph.

Trouble sending mail in Outlook Express

If you are having trouble sending mail while using Outlook Express or any email client, check for the following:

1. Email headers are an important part of preventing spam mail because it will show you the originating IP address of the email, regardless of the name of the sender. This will give you a clue if the IP address is from your own office or if it came from the legitimate sender's IP address or the email is just being spoofed.

To do this:

1. Highlight the email in the Inbox.
2. Right click and choose Properties.
3. In the window that pops out, choose the Details tab.

You will now see a text window. Look at the first line that says "received from". E.g. "Received: from mx2.mydestiny.net [202.8.224.33] by wwwcomphinc with ESMTP".

If the email is a spam mail, you can inform your system administrator of the originating IP address so that it can be blocked.

NOTE:
The originating IP address of any spam mail can only be determined by checking the email of the actual recipient. If you forward the mail, the header will reflect your own IP address because forwarding the mail is equivalent to "sending" the mail.

How do I Access and Use My Virtual Hosting Controller ?

To access your Virtual Hosting Controller, use your Web Browser and go to your Virtual Hosting Controller URL Address:

STEP 1.
Go to your Virtual Hosting Controller URL                            Address;

http://YourDomain.com/admin

STEP 2.
Provide your Domain Administrator Account Login Information;

USER NAME: YourUserName
PASSWORD: YourPassword

On using your Virtual Hosting Controller, please consult                            our Hosting Controller Manual and Help Guide by accessing                            the following URL Address;

<a href="http://www.com.ph/admin/help/webadmin/default.htm" target="_blank" onmouseover="window.status='Click to display our Hosting Controller Manual. You can do a "LOCAL WORK AROUND" on this issue by adding the following entries to your Windows Host File, as follows:

(Site IP number) (Your Domain Name)

Example:

69.93.219.154 www.com.ph

This means you are defining that the domain name www.com.ph is associated with the IP number 69.93.219.154. If you change IP numbers (such as by changing hosts or servers), then you need to reflect this immediately in your Windows Host File so that your domain name will associate with the new IP number.

To be able to find the location of your Windows Host File, do the following:

Start > Search > Files or Folders > Search for the file called HOST > Open HOST file using NOTEPAD > Add the entries below the 127.0.0.1 localhost > Save File > End

You will immediately notice that you will be able to view your domain without any problem and, you will never have the same problem again as you have already made a local DNS resolution set on your local PC.

Note:
This workaround will work for other domain names that you regularly visit. In order to find out the IP address of a particular domain name, you can check this article for instructions.

Page Cannot Be Displayed Error (DNS resolution issue)

You may occassionally encounter a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error on your browser. There are many possible causes for such an error such as no internet access, modem errors or server errors. However, the most common cause is due to a DNS error on the part of your ISP.

In the simplest terms, a Domain Name Server converts a domain name into the equivalent IP address that can be understood by a computer. You can compare it to your cellphone phone book. It would be almost impossible to memorize all your contacts if you had to remember their cellphone numbers. So you assign names associated with the cellphone numbers. So when you need to call someone, you just type in his/her name and the person's cellphone number comes up. DNS works in a similar way.

So every time you type a domain name into your browser, it sends a request to the DNS at your ISP and the domain name gets translated into the equivalent IP address so that the web pages you requested gets displayed on your computer. However, millions if not billions of requests get processed everyday. If your ISP's DNS gets overworked due to network traffic, some requests may not get processed or time out due to the huge server load, so the DNS at your ISP cannot resolve the domain name request. Thus there is a DNS resolution error and why sometimes you get the "Page Cannot be Displayed" error.

One simple way to test this is by accessing the same site by using another ISP. If you can view the site with a different ISP, then there is most likely a DNS resolution issue with your other ISP. One other way to test is by directly typing in the IP address of the site you want (if you know it). If it displays, then this points to another DNS issue with your ISP.

Fortunately, there is a workaround that is explained in detail here.

How do I Upload or Download my MS Access Database ?

To upload or download your MS Access Database, you need to access your Virtual FTP Server using an FTP Client Software as we explained first-above.

Once you are able to log-in on your Virtual FTP Server, upload or download your MS Access Database within the sub-directory /db. Our hosting servers are located in Texas, USA supported by on-site back up servers and secondary back up servers located in a separate data center. We provide virtual web, email and database hosting and dedicated server hosting as well.

We offer several competitive advantages that set us apart from other web hosting companies:

1. Data Security

We keep scheduled daily back ups not only of web files, but email files as well. This way, the effects of any data loss or corruption are minimized. This translates to better business income and opportunities as there is a way to recover important data.

Furthermore, we keep offsite back up or mirror servers, so that in the unlikely event that the main server is taken offline for any length of time, we can have the back up server up and running in the minimum amount of time so that your website and your emails stay up and active.

2. Burstable Disk Space

Most hosting companies have an "account lock out" policy, meaning once you reach your maximum allotted disk space you cannot receive any more data on your account. This means that incoming mail will bounce, and if you have an online database, the data will not be accepted as the account has been locked out due to overuse of disk space. For a business that relies heavily on time-critical email or database information, this can be a disaster as important information may not be reaching you.

At WWW.COM.PH, we realize that data is a critical factor in any business, especially now that a lot of businesses are connected through the Internet. Thus, we maintain a "no lock out" policy. Instead, we give you burstable disk space so that you can temporarily use more disk space than you are allotted. Our system will automatically detect and inform you if you have exceeded your disk space allotment, but at least you will have a grace period to download and benefit from the data you got.

3. Up-to-date Internet regulations compliance

Several Internet organizations set the regulations by which Internet protocols and transactions take place. These regulations change constantly, mostly in order to control the proliferation of spam email. Thus, the settings on an Internet server that are valid today could become invalid tomorrow if a change in regulations is implemented. This is why there are cases where you may suddenly be unable to send email to a particular address, because your addressee's server has changed its compliance settings whereas your own server has not.

It is therefore very important for hosting companies and ISPs to constantly update themselves with these changes in regulations and change their settings in order to be compliant. Unfortunately, not all companies are able to comply fast enough, either because of too much workload on the part of systems administrators or not being fully aware of all the Internet protocols being changed.

However, WWW.COM.PH is fully up-to-date and compliant with all the changes in Internet protocols. Our technical engineers work around the clock to make sure that any changes in regulations are reflected in our servers to keep any disruptions at an absolute minimum.

4. Voice / Phone Support

WWW.COM.PH maintains dedicated Support and Sales lines in order to make sure that whatever needs our clients may have can be addressed immediately. We realize the value of talking to another person, thus we provide our clients the means by which to convey any concerns or questions through the use of the phone.

5.
