I have trouble connecting or staying connected on my FTP

In cases where you are having trouble connecting or staying connected to your FTP connection when using an FTP client, there are several factors to consider:

1. Internet connection

First check if you have a stable Internet connection. When Internet connection is intermittent or unstable, then this can cause cut offs with the FTP connection.

You can use the PING command to test your Internet connection as follows:

a. Go to Command Prompt (Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt).
b. At the C:\> type the following: ping -t (domain name or IP address).

If you are getting a lot of timeouts, then your Internet connection is unstable.

2. LAN settings

Check if your LAN is having a problem. Go to the LAN server and try to connect from there. If you can connect with the server but not with any of the client PCs, then there is an issue with the LAN.

3. Firewall settings

Make sure that your firewall (either at the client PC or server) is not blocking FTP access. If access was working before, someone may have accidentally changed the settings or if there is an automatic program update, this can sometimes change certain settings even without the user doing anything.

4. FTP client settings

a. Go to Advanced settings and switch in between ACTIVE and PASSIVE modes.

In Filezilla, go to Site Manager > highlight the FTP site > click the Advanced button.

b. Check the Keep Alive and Timeout settings under Edit > Settings.
